Hempcrete 101
Hempcrete (sometimes written as "hemp-crete" or "hemp concrete") is a bio-composite building material made from three primary ingredients:
- Hemp hurd — the woody inner core of the industrial hemp stalk
- Lime binder — typically hydraulic lime or a lime-pozzolan blend
- Water
When mixed and applied (either cast in place, sprayed, or formed into blocks), these ingredients create a lightweight, insulating wall material that hardens over time through a process called carbonation — where the lime absorbs CO₂ from the atmosphere and converts to calcium carbonate.
Key Properties
Insulation
Hempcrete provides moderate insulation value on its own (approximately R-2.0 to R-2.5 per inch in standard mixes), but hemp walls are typically 10 to 14 inches thick. The resulting wall assembly delivers R-20 to R-35 depending on the mix design and wall thickness. Additionally, hemp-lime provides significant thermal mass, smoothing out temperature swings and reducing peak energy demand.
Breathability
One of hempcrete's most important qualities is its vapor permeability. The material allows moisture to pass through the wall assembly without trapping it — dramatically reducing the risk of condensation, mold, and rot. This is fundamentally different from conventional wall systems that rely on vapor barriers to manage moisture.
Carbon Sequestration
Hemp absorbs CO₂ as it grows (approximately 1.8 tons of CO₂ per ton of dry hemp, according to the European Industrial Hemp Association). When combined with lime, which also absorbs CO₂ during carbonation, the resulting wall material locks carbon away for the life of the building. Peer-reviewed research from the University of Bath has confirmed that hemp-lime construction can achieve net-negative carbon emissions over its lifecycle.
Fire Resistance
Contrary to assumptions, hempcrete is highly fire-resistant. The calcium carbonate shell that forms around each hemp particle creates a mineral barrier. Tests have shown hemp-lime walls withstanding direct flame for over 60 minutes without structural compromise.
Limitations of Standard Hempcrete
- Not structural: Hempcrete requires a load-bearing frame (timber, steel, or other). It is an infill material, not a structural one.
- Curing time: Standard hempcrete can take several weeks to months to fully cure and dry, depending on climate conditions.
- Availability: In the United States, hemp hurd supply chains are still developing. Most premium hurd is imported from Europe or Canada.
