Why Builders Are Looking Beyond Conventional Materials

The construction industry is at a crossroads. Rising energy costs, increasing awareness of indoor air quality, and growing demand for sustainable practices are pushing builders to evaluate alternatives to the materials they've relied on for decades.

Hemp-based building materials — particularly hempcrete and advanced formulations like GaiaCrete™ — offer a compelling case.

The Comparison

Thermal Performance (R-Value)

  • Fiberglass batt insulation: R-3.1 to R-3.4 per inch
  • Standard hempcrete: R-2.0 to R-2.5 per inch (but hemp walls are typically 12" thick, yielding R-24 to R-30 for the assembly)
  • GaiaCrete™: Formulated to improve R-value per inch relative to standard hemp-lime mixes; assembly performance should be verified per project

Hemp wall systems provide consistent thermal mass effects — meaning they regulate temperature fluctuations throughout the day, reducing peak heating and cooling loads.

Fire Resistance

  • Fiberglass: The glass fibers themselves don't burn, but the paper facing and binders can ignite. Fiberglass melts at approximately 1,000°F.
  • Spray foam: Highly flammable without thermal barriers. Releases toxic fumes when burning.
  • Hemp-lime composites: Naturally fire-resistant. The calcium carbonate formed during the curing of lime creates a mineral exterior that resists flame spread. Testing has demonstrated that hemp-lime walls can withstand direct flame exposure for extended periods without structural failure.

Moisture and Mold

  • Drywall: Absorbs moisture readily and is a primary food source for mold. Water-damaged drywall typically requires full replacement.
  • Hemp-lime: Hygroscopic — absorbs and releases moisture without degrading. The alkaline lime environment naturally inhibits mold and bacterial growth.

Environmental Impact

  • Concrete: Portland cement production accounts for roughly 8% of global CO₂ emissions (Chatham House, 2018).
  • Hemp-lime: Can be carbon negative over its lifecycle depending on binder, transport and end-of-life assumptions. Hemp absorbs approximately 1.8 tons of CO₂ per ton grown (European Industrial Hemp Association).

Health Impact

  • Fiberglass: Airborne glass fibers can irritate skin, eyes, and lungs during installation.
  • Spray foam: Off-gasses isocyanates during application and VOCs for an extended period after installation.
  • Hemp-lime: No off-gassing. No irritating fibers. Naturally regulates indoor humidity, creating a healthier living environment.

The Bottom Line

Hemp-based building materials are a credible alternative for many projects, with real trade-offs in cost, thickness, drying time and code familiarity. They are not the right answer for every wall in every climate.
