Barcode Scan and the Home Health Score, Explained

September 5, 20266 min readBy Christopher L. Penn

Two Moments, Two Tools

Every household product passes through two moments: the aisle where you decide to buy it, and the years it spends in your home afterward. The ToxScan™ Healthy Home Assessment has a mode for each.

Barcode Scan: Decide Before You Buy

Scan the barcode on the packaging instead of framing a photograph. The tool identifies the exact product and returns the same kind of review as Item Scan — what is commonly inside it, and what comparable alternatives exist.

Used in a store, it changes the economics of a healthier home completely. Replacing a mattress you already own is expensive. Choosing a different mattress at the point of purchase costs nothing extra.

Barcode Scan depends on the product carrying a readable barcode and on that product being recognizable; where it is not, the photo-based Item Scan is the fallback.

Home Health Score™: See the Whole House

Individual scans produce individual answers. The Home Health Score™ exists because a homeowner needs something else — an order of operations.

It summarizes what you have scanned into a prioritized picture of the home: which findings carry the most weight, which rooms deserve attention first, and what is worth evaluating next. It looks at conditions and materials a homeowner can act on — ventilation, moisture, finishes, the age of systems — and helps sequence the work.

A Home Health Score™ describes the building and its contents, not the people inside it. It does not diagnose, test for, or predict any medical condition, and it is not a substitute for professional inspection or laboratory testing.

A Sensible Sequence

  • Room Scan the spaces where your family spends the most time.
  • Item Scan the daily-contact products those rooms missed.
  • Check the Home Health Score™ to decide the first three things to change.
  • Barcode Scan every replacement before it comes through the door.

When the Answer Is the Building

Some findings are not products at all — they are walls, insulation and assemblies. That work belongs to Mr Hemp House® and the GaiaCrete™ hemp-lime composite, with performance depending on the specific assembly, climate zone and installation. The full context is on the Healthy Homes page and in The Healthy Home Assessment.
