Start With What You Already Own
Most conversations about healthy homes jump straight to renovation. That is the expensive answer, and it is rarely the first one. The cheaper starting point is information: what is already inside your house, what it is made of, and which of those items are worth replacing first.
That is the job of the ToxScan™ Healthy Home Assessment built by Mr Hemp House®.
Four Ways to Look at a Home
The assessment is not a single test. It is a set of scanning modes that answer different questions.
| Mode | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| Item Scan | Photograph a single product. The tool identifies it, describes the concerning ingredients or materials commonly associated with that type of product, and suggests alternatives. |
| Room Scan | Photograph a whole room. The tool identifies the items it can recognize and applies the same review to each one. |
| Barcode Scan | Scan a product barcode instead of framing a photo — useful in a store aisle, before the product ever enters the house. |
| Home Health Score™ | A summary view that turns what you have scanned into a prioritized picture of the home. |
Together they cover the two moments that matter: what is already here, and what you are about to buy.
Why Photos Instead of Lab Tests
Laboratory testing is precise, slow and expensive. Most families will never run it, so most families never learn anything at all about their home. A photo-based review is not a substitute for lab analysis, but it works at the scale of an ordinary Saturday afternoon — you walk the house, scan what you use every day, and end up with a list.
That list is the point. Awareness first, priorities second, replacement third.
What It Does Not Do
The assessment describes products, materials and conditions. It does not diagnose, test for, or predict any medical condition, and it is not a substitute for professional inspection, laboratory testing or medical advice. Results depend on what the camera can see and on how a product is manufactured.
Christopher L. Penn is direct about this: the tool is meant to make a homeowner better informed, not to hand out verdicts.
Where the Building Side Picks Up
Assessment tells you what to prioritize. When the answer involves walls, insulation or a renovation, the material side of the work lives with Mr Hemp House® and the GaiaCrete™ hemp-lime composite — bio-based wall assemblies designed for thermal performance, moisture regulation and fire behavior, with results depending on the specific assembly, climate zone and installation.

Getting Started
- Open the Healthy Home Assessment.
- Start with the rooms where your family spends the most time — bedrooms, the kitchen, a nursery.
- Scan the products you touch daily before the ones you touch twice a year.
- Use the Home Health Score™ view to decide what to change first.
You cannot replace everything at once. You can replace the right things first.
